If Fairly Legal (USA Network, Thur. 10:00 PM) doesn’t intrigue America it won’t be for want of a beautiful, sexy, confidant mediator. Though packed with clichés, the show works hard to broadcast a positive message. From her staff filled, elegant office, attorney-turned-mediator Kate Reed, daughter of a successful, deceased, San Francisco attorney, works through two cases per show. Directly and indirectly the mediator is portrayed as a referee, one who finds justice “higher than the law” and helps clients find it through understanding their interests, one who listens to and values all voices, a creative thinker, and a hard worker putting in long hours. The plot reveals a few personal problems also lest she be seen as too good to be true.
